5 Romantic Places to Visit While in Mount Isa
on 01 February 2020 in Travel & Lifestyle

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love is in the air. And there’s nothing you’d want more than to make your loved one feel exceptionally loved up.

Year in, year out, it may become harder and harder to impress your loved one with an ingenious romantic idea. Lucky for you, we’ve got you covered with the top 5 romantic places to visit in Mount Isa bound to make your loved one feel special this year.

A Picnic at Lake Moondarra

Start things off with a romatic picnic at Lake Moondarra. If both of you are early risers, try and make an effort to come here for the sunrise to get some picturesque snaps that will make your Instagram followers truly jealous.

With several scenic spots to pull out a picnic rug, you will be glad to have the large shady trees as cover from the sun. If you’d like to go full barbecue picnic for the special one, there are plenty of free barbeque spots with regularly stocked woodpiles.

Go for a swim in the lake together, or adventure with some boating, sailing, or canoeing. If they like fishing, bring a line to throw in as there's plenty of barramundi to be caught.

Watch the variety of birds go about their daily lives, as you bask in a moment that will create memories to be remembered for years to come.

It also pays off to know that Lake Moondarra is only 17 kilometres North of Mount Isa, making it a quick and easy trip.

A Visit to the Mary Kathleen Mine

Now, this may seem a bit odd as a romantic idea, but the scenery in store for you is nothing short of spectacular.

With the hint of danger and excitement, this old Uranium mine has the scenic views of a deserted John Wayne film. With its sapphire blue coloured waters, a picture of it will have the Amalfi Coast in envy.

As a fun trivia to impress that special someone, you can give them some history of the Mary Kathleen mine.

What was once Australia’s first major uranium mine rehabilitation project in 1985, the Mary Kathleen mine was deserted shortly after. None of the buildings remained as they were sold and taken to Mount Isa and Cloncurry. However, the building foundations still stand strong as a symbol of what the old town square looked like once upon a time.

As to why the waters are so blue, the surrounding rocks are subjected to weathering and chemical reactions which cause it to release various metals and salts that result in a range of colours in the waters. The rusty red colour associated with iron, while the blues and greens are linked to copper, solids or magnesium. These colours are common with gold and copper mines worldwide.

The Mary Kathleen mine is only 10 kilometres from Mount Isa City.

The Best View of the City in the Outback

End the day with a venture to the City Lookout. Offering magnificent 360 panoramic views of Mount Isa city, the best time to grab these awe inspiring views is at night.

The darkness that takes over the realms beneath reflect silhouettes of mine lights competing with city glows in the distance. Stargaze together with that special someone and bask in some memories and deep conversations.
