Mount Isa has a rich mining history, dating back to 1923, when its vast mineral deposits were first discovered, and the town was formed. Mount Isa is still a prosperous mining town today, and the giant stacks of the famous MIM ore smelting mine are visible from all over town.
While Mount Isa has grown and prospered, the landscape you see today is very much unchanged. Visitors travel from all over to enjoy our outback, for the fishing, camping, four wheel driving, or just to admire the impressive outback sunsets.
Mount Isa RodeoMount Isa is widely known as the rodeo capital of Australia. The annual Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is held in August, and brings more than 25,000 visitors to Mount Isa over the three event days. Adel's GroveA great camping site, located next to Lawn Hill Creek and downstream from the Gorge, with easy access to the Lawn Hill National Park. An on-premise restaurant, small shop, small air strip and national park tours - the Riversleigh Fossil Deposits tour is a must-see!

Riversleigh Fossil DepositsThe fossils on display at Riversleigh are some of the richest and most extensive deposits in the world. Some date back as far as 25 million years! Turtles, fish, snails, crocodiles, lizards, pythons, birds and many types of mammals have been discovered in the Riversleigh deposits, showing what life was like for these animals before the continental shift.
Underground Hospital and MuseumVisit the first hospital to operate in Mount Isa, built underground to protect patients during WWII in the event of an air raid. Brimming with history, the site offers the chance for visitors to experience what life was like in the early days of Mount Isa, with an accompanying museum, and replica tent house to explore.
